While both men and women struggle with weight loss, many women find it harder to lose weight than men do because women naturally have higher fat levels than men. Women have higher fat levels so that they are able to give birth and recover from it. This is why women have so much more Estrogen, a fat storing hormone, than men. As a consequence of this, women require fewer calories to put on a pound of weight than men do.

What this means is that good diets that work fast for women are different from the ones that work best for men. Additionally, while the optimum fat level in men is around 15 percent, for women it is around 25 percent. So, for women to lose weight and stay healthy, they still need some fat in their diets. Women also need to ensure that they do not cut dairy out of their diets because calcium deficiencies are so common in women.

When a woman considers losing weight, the choices she makes for her meal plan are important. Good diets that work fast for women will need to eliminate “bad” fats, such as saturated and trans fats. These “bad” fats should be replaced with “good” fats, such as avocados, most nuts, tofu and soy. As mentioned, calcium is a very important part of a woman’s diet, and good diets that work fast for women will include low fat dairy. Further, studies have shown that people who consume low fat dairy while dieting lose more weight than people who do not.

Another major difference between diets for men and women is exercise. While muscle building and cardio are important for both genders, as they raise people’s metabolism naturally, how the exercise is performed matters. Good diets that work fast for women will involve muscle strengthening exercises that include light weights and high reps. This will develop lean and toned muscle without bulking up. Further, because of the way that women’s bone structures are built, high impact exercise is not good for their joints. Since women have wider hips, they are not naturally designed for running and jogging. This does not mean that women cannot perform this type of exercise, but it often leads to joint problems later in life.

So, if a woman is looking for a diet that will work quickly, she should be sure to look for a plan that is designed to work for a woman.

Starting a diet and actually sticking to it are two completely different things. Anybody can declare that they are dieting. That really doesn’t mean a whole lot. Being able to maintain your diet is the tricky part. There’s no simple solution for this. However there are some valuable steps you can take to improve your chances of maintaining a healthy diet and successfully losing weight.

1. Choose the Right Diet

The first problem a lot of people run into is choosing the wrong diet. This is surprisingly overlooked when people consider why their weight loss plan failed. Choosing the right diet in itself can determine whether you succeed or fail. So how do you choose the right diet? Well, the first thing you need to do is avoid information overload.

There are thousands of diets to choose from. This may seem like a good thing, but it’s actually not. Too much information can force you to spend more time reading about diets and less time actually dieting. Nobody ever lost weight reading a diet book. Don’t waste too much time trying to find the perfect diet. Truth be told, there is no such thing. Everyone’s body will react differently to different diets. The only way to find out if it works is to take action.

So instead of sifting through all of the diets out there, just ask a dietician or a doctor for some advice. In general any diet that includes a healthy serving of fruit and vegetables, and forces you to eat in moderation is going to work. Smart weight loss programs will always include exercise, so you won’t need to rely too heavily on your diet. You’re really just looking for a diet that keeps you healthy and doesn’t put on excess weight. Your exercise plan will do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to shedding the unwanted pounds.

2. Focus on Long-term Results

Although we are all looking for quick weight loss results, we are also hoping for long-term results. Nobody ever says they want to get in great shape for the summer and then gain lots of weight for the winter. Sadly that is often the pattern most dieters follow though. This problem stems from the need to achieve immediate results. This is often done at the sacrifice of long-term weight loss.

Quick weight loss often comes from extreme dieting and exercise. Many of the fad diets out there rely heavily on this. As expected, most people are unable to stick with extreme weight loss plans for more than a month or so. It’s just too much work. Therefore you lose a lot of weight for a short period of time, and then you gain back a lot more. This is a very unhealthy way to diet. Not to mention the damage it can do to your confidence and self-esteem.

Choose a diet plan that is neither harsh nor indulgent. A simple diet that is full of healthy food and relies heavily on moderation will be your best option. And only choose a weight loss program that you know you will be able to maintain for the long haul.

3. Track Your Diet

One of the most underrated methods of dieting is keeping track of your meals and calories. This should really be the cornerstone of all diets. The simple task of recording what you are eating and how many calories can double the success rate of any diet. It may seem rigid, but this actually allows more flexibility in your diet and allows you to make adjustments throughout the day.

Nowadays there are plenty of high-tech ways to track your diet, but I prefer a good old-fashioned food journal. If you are more comfortable using an online food journal or some kind of diet tracking software, then by all means use them. I’m sure there are plenty of diet apps out there as well. The important thing is that you know what you are eating each day.

Most people don’t give up on their diet immediately. They slowly gravitate away from it. It starts with something small like an extra helping at dinner or an unplanned snack before bed. Eventually it becomes total abandonment of their diet and weight loss goals. Don’t let that happen. If you have a well-laid out diet plan and you keep track of it, then you are much more likely to stick to it.

Health and fitness is not about dragging yourself into doing things you don’t like. When you think about being healthy, you would probably equate it with everything boring. Like eating “boring” foods, and doing “boring” exercise, and even being a “boring” person. If this happens to be your mindset, then you would be confined to a negative idea of being healthy. Consequently, you don’t have the motivation or interest of doing effort for a health and fitness plan. And even if you do try to diet or exercise, you’d eventually end up being discouraged or losing interest. It’s basically about how you think and how you perceive something which motivates you into being successful (or not) in a certain goal or pursuit.

Many people may not see the total picture of being fit and healthy. You may have noticed that a large number of people are primarily concerned about losing weight. And so there is a barrage of quick weight loss diets and other schemes in the market. People want to lose weight because they want to look good. But if they resort to rapid weight loss schemes, they often put their health and well-being at risk. There are countless of fad diets out there, but they could end up depriving you of essential nutrients. Nutrition is a major component in achieving optimal wellness.

If you happen to be undernourished with essential nutrients, then you might as well anticipate that your health would suffer. And what good would losing weight be, or looking good is if you are ill. If you go on unhealthy dieting, your mind and emotions could be effected. You could end up being moody or irritable, or unable to gather your thoughts or concentrate well. So when it comes to losing weight, see the bigger picture of health and well-being rather than just looking good. In this manner, you would reap better results-health and fitness from the inside out. Being healthy from the inside out nourishes the total you.

You would look trim, yet enjoy vitality and be free from illness at the same time. Think of yourself in this manner- a healthy person looking your best and feeling your best. Only then would you realize that health and fitness is a worthy goal. And as you think of it as a worthy pursuit, you would be willing to exert necessary effort for it, even if it takes time. Some people neglect having a wellness and fitness scheme. But as you grow older, you have to realize that your body’s processes begin to slow down. Eventually you would begin to feel aches and pains and other symptoms which are indications of your body breaking down.

But a wellness and fitness scheme practiced early on can make the later years less agonizing. And in fact, “health and fitness” should be more than a transitory program for losing weight. Rather, health and fitness should be a lifestyle. When you think about health and fitness, think of yourself as a better and happier person. Where you look your best and your body functions to its optimum. Where you are as productive as you would want to be at work and enjoying healthier and happier relationships. Think of the countless positive rewards and you will have the best motivations for weight loss, health and fitness.

And when you have the right motivations, the more chances for you to be successful in achieving your goals.

Lower back pain is so common and easily induced that 80% of adults have experienced the condition. However, lower back pain can be avoided or eliminated by following the proper diet health and fitness regimen.

If and when you experience pain or soreness in you back for more than one day you should visit your local chiropractor or doctor for x-rays. This is critical as most back pain will not go away on its own and will most likely worsen if ignored.

Most lower back pain is caused by injury, overuse of the back and/or muscle strain. After the initial and chronic pain has healed the best thing you can do for back pain treatment is to begin a fitness program of exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of your lower back.

A simple search in you tube will provide free videos to learn some of the many different types of lower back pain exercises. However, for optimal health and fitness you should try to perform a variety of exercises that will strengthen your entire body, as well as your lower back area.

Back Health And Fitness – Diet And Weight Maintenance

The first thing I would recommend to dull your pain is that you avoid eating any refined sugar (white sugar), as sugar greatly amplifies any pain within your body. Try to eat as healthy a diet, mostly organic fruits and vegetables, as you can. Don’t overlook your diet health when you have pain or an injury. Your diet plays a very important role in the internal healing of injuries.

Staying slim is essential to avoiding and reducing back pain as well as being healthy in general. Any excess weight is extra strain on your back and aerobic exercise is your key to maintaining a healthy weight. Aerobic exercises like biking and walking are low-impact and can be easy on the lower back.

Back Health And Fitness – Strengthening

Strength building is important for keeping your back conditioned. When working out you want to strengthen the areas that support your back like your:

* Abdominals
* Hips
* Legs

Unless you are already experienced in the area of fitness and strength training it would be a good idea to do so under the supervision of some type of trainer, doctor or physical therapist.

Back Health And Fitness – Stretching

Most people, especially males, will overlook stretching as an important part of their health and fitness regimen. Stretching is just as important as the exercises you do so make sure that you spend the proper time stretching every day.

Your flexibility can only change gradually so it is important to stretch every day in order to consistently gain flexibility. Increased flexibility will drastically reduce your chance of injury and will enhance your muscle strength and power.

But, like strength training, stretching should also be done with some type of expert supervision or guidance so you don’t overdo it and hurt yourself. Hopefully some of these recommendations can reduce your pain and help you avoid any future occurrences.

The most crippling type of pain is often lower back pain. This is because if your back pain is strong enough it can keep you from doing anything other than lying in a bed. Lower back pain is also a common health affliction that affects millions of people worldwide.

No matter what your health and fitness levels just about everyone has had some type of lower back pain at one point or another in their life. And the type of pain can vary from very mild to severe to crippling.

Many people, at the onset of back pain will often dismiss the issue and pretend that it will go away on its own. However, this is not usually the case as most types of back pain require some type of treatment from a chiropractor, doctor, or masseuse.

Often when the problem is ignored it only gets worse. The best way to deal with your lower back pain is to learn more about the causes so you can work towards focusing on the correct treatment.

What Causes It?

Everyone lives a different lifestyle and so the cause of one’s back pain can be from a plethora of different causes. If you are aware enough of your body and your lifestyle you should be able to pinpoint the cause of your pain.

There are a few causes that are especially common, however, they include:
* Poor posture
* Daily work habits
* Obesity
* Genetics
* Riding in a car for a long period of time
* Poor diet health (sugar increases pain)
* Bad mattress
* Poor health and fitness commitment
* Working at a computer all day
* Lifting or exercising incorrectly
* Weak muscles

How Do I Treat The Pain?

Your treatment method for lower back pain will vary, depending on the cause of the pain, the type of pain you are experiencing and the severity of it. In the case of chronic pain, medication or surgery may be suggested.

For most other types of back discomfort fitness exercises have always shown to be one of the most effective forms of treatment and the way to prevent future occurrences. Exercise never fails as it helps to work out and stretch the muscles in your back to prevent them from becoming tight and sore.

Always make sure you do your fitness exercises correctly, however, as further serious injury could occur if not. If you have severe back pain it is best to consult with your doctor or chiropractor about the types and ranges of motion you can and should perform to heal your back pain.

The Mental Health Component

Practicing Yoga or Tai Chi has also been very effective at eliminating and preventing further back pain. These exercises, along with stretching your back, will teach you the mental visualization techniques that are necessary for healing as well.

Never underestimate the power of focusing your mind. Without a clear deliberate mental intent to heal your back pain it will be tough to get the strength to perform the actions necessary to get rid of your pain. Once you have gotten rid of the pain it is necessary to always make diet health and fitness a top priority in your life to prevent further issues.

Recently, as more people in the West are becoming aware of the importance of health and fitness, they are practicing Eastern traditions like Yoga and Tai Chi, which emphasize meditation. Once they learn how to meditate they are discovering the incredible health and fitness benefits meditation provides.

The health and fitness benefits of meditation include:
* Energy alignment of the entire body
* Internal cleansing of the body
* Improvement in health of major organs
* Less stress/anxiety
* Clear mind
* More oxygen to the cells
* More energy
* Positive mood

The most important reason to meditate is because it just makes you feel better. And if you don’t understand what feeling good will do for you, you have missed the point of life.

Enlighten yourself

Beyond the health and fitness benefits of meditation the real reason for meditating is to enlighten yourself. You do this by blending with your soul.

You don’t have to call it a “soul” if you don’t like that word, call it whatever you want. All that is important is that you realize there is an energy force that is separate from your body that keeps you alive in your body.

This energy source is a much greater, and broader part of you than you can begin to comprehend conceptually, but it is only important to acknowledge that it exists. You can get in touch with it through meditation.

Meditation, through breathing techniques, will teach you how to quiet your thinking mind and concentrate your attention on your inner-being. When you are able to do so (as with anything this takes consistent practice) you will feel the amazing benefits of meditation. I can’t really describe the peaceful, positive feeling of meditation in words, you really have to experience it for yourself.

How To Learn The Techniques

There are endless meditation instruction books, CD’s and videos available on the internet to teach you how to meditate. Amazon has some great material if you just type in the keyword phrase “meditation.”

You tube also has many free instructional videos to teach you many different meditation techniques as well as Yoga and Tai Chi. You can also enroll in Yoga, Tai Chi, or meditation classes in your local area.

Other Things to Help You

The environment you are in can be a vital aspect of your meditation. When you get good at meditating you can do it anywhere anytime, but when you start, and for ideal conditions, it is good to have a very relaxing place to be.

Many people even make there own meditation area or room in their home. Others always meditate out in nature. Do whatever you need to do to find a place where you can relax.

Then it is sometimes best to use either a CD or DVD of guided meditation with someone instructing you, or to pick out music that relaxes you. It is very beneficial to be able to meditate in silence, but many find it much more difficult than with music or an instructor.

Staying current with dental care cleanings and treatments is important – regardless of your age.

In today’s economy, however, some look at preventive dental care treatments as an extra cost that can be cut. Unfortunately, doing this tends to only lead to more painful situations – for both your teeth and your pocket book.

First, we’ll explore the challenges of paying for dental care for each age group, including children, students, newlyweds and seniors. Then, we’ll provide a solution that can help make dental care more affordable at any age.

Dental Care Budgeting Challenges for Each Age Group

Children from Kindergarten to 12th Grade

For families on limited budgets, or families just temporarily hurting from the tough economy, preventive visits to the dentist may get lost in the budget cuts.

This is unfortunate, because dental disease currently accounts for 51 million lost school hours per year, and it is preventable in most cases.

Many parents share the misconception that dental care can be postponed until their children’s baby teeth are replaced by adult teeth. But on the contrary, dental health issues from childhood often transfer to adult teeth.

A simple way to reduce the chances of lifetime dental health issues for your children is to take them to the dentist twice a year for preventive checkups and cleanings – in order to catch and fix problems in early stages.

College Students

While many students operate on a shoe-string budget during these years, it’s still important to keep dental care cleanings and treatments current.

Doing this, however, becomes trickier as access to family dental insurance plans waivers based on age and student status limitations.

In situations where students do not have dental insurance, it’s easy to see treatments and checkups as auxiliary costs that can be temporarily dropped. With an already limited budget and no assistance with dental care costs, a root canal or other major dental procedure can become a very painful and expensive experience for a college student.

Just Married

For those who get married in their 20s or 30s, other major purchases may take away from the health care budget.

Buying a house, getting a new car or even making room in the budget for future additions to the family make it tempting to lengthen the time between dental checkups and cleanings.

However, just as with other age groups, postponing preventive checkups and cleanings can lead to much bigger problems down the road – especially when the dental care budget has already been reallocated for other expenses.

Golden Years

Many seniors find themselves on a fixed income and unfortunately, with age, the risk for dental problems increases.

A study conducted in New York showed that among seniors, 15% listed cost as the main barrier to accessing the dental care they need. For the other 85%, transportation was the leading barrier, which in many cases may tie indirectly to financial problems.

Seniors have a 300% greater chance to develop cavities than children and about 30% of all seniors lose their natural teeth. With statistics like these, it is easy to see why it’s so important for seniors to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings.

A Dental Care Solution for Any Age Group

All too often, when people of any age group find themselves lacking either medical or dental insurance, they go into “wait until something happens” mode. And this can be a very costly mistake.

Healthy teeth and gums play a fundamental role in our overall health. Regrettably, rising dental insurance premiums and treatment costs have made dental care inaccessible to many people across the nation. Today, there are more than 108 million children and adults without dental insurance in the U.S. As the need for affordable dental care continues to grow, more and more people turn toward discount dental plans as a cost-effective and easy-to-use alternative to dental insurance.

Current research shows a clear shift in the dental benefits marketplace attributed, in part, to concerns with cost, choice and service. Many consumers and employers are moving away from the inflated premiums, strict restrictions, poor service and other limitations often associated with traditional dental insurance and are looking toward the savings and benefits offered by discount dental plans. “With an estimated 45% of Americans not having any type of dental coverage, and the dental insurance marketplace offering few, affordable dental products for individuals, discount dental plans are an attractive answer to the need to reduce consumer out-of-pocket costs and increase access to care.”

Discount dental plans provide consumers with the value they desire by offering access to affordable, quality dental care at a low price and with an emphasis on choice and service. Plan members pay a low annual membership fee and are granted access to a network of participating providers offering discounts of 10% to 60% on most dental procedures, including braces, root canals, crowns, dentures, cosmetic dentistry and more on select plans. Certain plans even include discounts on additional benefits, including prescription, vision, hearing and chiropractic care.

Discount dental plans, designed to provide significant savings on members’ dental care needs, have quickly become an attractive alternative to costly dental insurance. Traditional dental insurance, once the only dental benefit option available, features many drawbacks including costly deductibles, tedious claim forms, long waiting periods and other limitations. On the other hand, discount dental plans are more cost-effective, easy-to-use and free of these hassles.

Additionally, discount dental plans – starting at $79.95 per year for individuals and $129.95 per year for families – are much more affordable than dental insurance. According to a 2005 report by the National Association of Dental Plans (NADP), a trusted representative of the dental benefits industry, the average monthly premium for individual dental HMO insurance is nearly $16 (about $192 per year), compared to nearly $24 (about $288 per year) for individual dental PPO insurance and nearly $31 (about $372 per year) for individual dental indemnity insurance. According to NADP, “Discount dental plans have become an economical and important alternative to combat the rising cost of health care. They are a cost-effective vehicle for millions of undeserved consumers to improve their access to dental care.”

Discount dental plans also provide businesses and other groups with dental benefits that are easy to implement and practically effortless to manage. Many businesses are using discount dental plans to offer dental benefits to people that are rarely covered by traditional dental insurance, including retirees, part-timers, seasonal workers and uninsured dependents. Businesses can protect their employees’ health and provide peace of mind by encouraging their team to join a money-saving discount dental plan.

In short, discount dental plans offer individual, families, businesses and other groups with a great deal of value by providing access to affordable dental care without sacrificing service or flexibility. Discount dental plans are an ideal solution for anyone looking to save money while improving their oral health.

The demand for obesity surgery has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade, thanks to the explosive increase in morbid obesity rate.

Obesity is a leading public health concern today and it is not only overeating and lack of exercise that promotes obesity, our modern lifestyle is equally responsible for fuelling the phenomenon, which further elevates an obese individual’s risk for heart disease, diabetes and premature mortality.

Worldwide obesity rate inches upward, so do the demand for surgical weight loss options. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has more than doubled since 1980, with more than 1 billion adults around the world are now overweight, and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese.

Over the course of past few years, obesity surgery has grown in popularity, thanks to the vast advancements in surgery techniques and development of new surgical instruments. By some estimates, approximately 100,000 severely obese people in the United States go under the bariatrician’s knife every year to get rid of those oodles of extra fat around their midsection.

Obesity surgery is the most effective treatment for chronically obese people. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recommended obesity surgery for people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40 or who have a BMI of 35 with serious obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.

Obesity surgery comes under the category of bariatric surgery which is further classified as restrictive procedures, malabsorptive procedures and combined restrictive/malabsorptive procedures. Each of these procedures has several variations.

Restrictive Surgery Options
Restrictive Procedures- As the name implies, these surgical procedures restrict the food intake by making the stomach smaller. Following the restrictive surgery, a person feels fully satisfied even after consuming less food.

The much more commonly performed restrictive surgeries include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB) also known as the Laparoscopic Band or Lap Band for short, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty more commonly known as Stomach Stapling, Gastric Sleeve surgery, and the Gastric Balloon.

Malabsorptive Procedures- The surgeries in this category are done on the stomach and/or intestines to alter the normal digestive process, which results in considerable weight loss. The main type of obesity surgery in this category is Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD). Purely malabsorptive surgeries are no longer done because of quite high risks of malnutrition.

Restrictive and Malabsorptive Procedures- When used in combination, these procedures limit the absorption of proteins, calories and other nutrients by stomach, while also making the stomach smaller. Long limb or Distal Gastric Bypass and Duodenal Switch are the two most common surgical interventions for morbid obesity in this category.

Of all types of obesity surgery, Open Gastric Bypass (combination of restrictive and malabsorptive procedures), Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (combination of restrictive and malabsorptive procedures) and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding – Lap Band (restrictive procedure) are by far the most sought after surgical options by morbidly obese people.

While a variety of surgical procedures for morbid obesity are available, gastric bypass surgery is the most commonly used procedure. Gastric bypass surgery can be further categorized in three main types – Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB), Mini-Gastric Bypass Surgery and Extensive gastric bypass (biliopancreatic diversion). According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), an estimated 140,000 gastric bypass surgeries are carried out every year in the United States.

If you are dangerously overweight and have failed to shed those extra pounds through conventional approaches, such as diet and exercise, or if you are suffering from serious health problems caused by your massive body fat, then obesity surgery may be the only option for you.

How much someone weighs is a thing that anyone easily notices. Most of the time, people are judged by the weight of their body instead of the weight of their attitude. Our physical appearance is the image that the world can see and because of that it is also that one thing can cause a great deal of stress in our lives.

Now, it all boils down to how you choose to deal with that stress. If you are overweight and you don’t want it to affect you, then you can always do something about it. One thing you can do is to learn the ways on how you can lose those extra pounds so you no longer have to stress about nothing.

Losing weight does not happen without effort though. But it also doesn’t necessarily mean that because you work on it and give some amount of effort, it can cause you more stress. Making the decision to commit in a weight loss plan is the first thing you can do. And you don’t even have to worry about anything else; if you are focused on losing that weight then you are going in the right direction.

A lot of us turn to food when we are stressed. You may start craving for sweets and unhealthy foods to cope with a stressful situation. You eat to feel better but this can also lead to you being overweight which adds more stress. Weighing more than what the society sees as acceptable makes you feel bad and stressed. So to comfort yourself, you eat more thus worsening the situation.

If you feel that you are trapped in this negative spiral, then here are a few things you can do to make positive changes:

Be Aware of Your Destructive Habits

You have to know and accept the problem in order to properly deal with it. Write it down every time you do it. One thing you can do is to associate that habit with something that you don’t like such as pain or humiliation. Find a way to control these habits by triggering a painful or humiliating stimulus every time you do it.

Look for Other Ways to Feel Better

Finding a way to distance yourself from your eating habits is an important thing to do. Take up things that interest you like a new hobby or sport that can lead you away from doing those bad habits. You can buy a pet that you like and use it to take away your stress.

Fix the Source of Stress Head on

If something at work or at home is causing you stress, you should take the time to fix it there and then. Don’t walk away from it instead deal with it head on. This way, problems don’t get bigger and you eliminate the source of stress before it actually affects you.

Don’t Expect Miracles to Happen, Work on it

There is no easy way to losing all that excess weight that’s causing your stress. It will require quite an amount of time and dedication to change those bad habits to productive ones. You can’t expect to speed through it and make big changes overnight because this does not last long. Instead, make small, gradual, yet lasting changes to your habits.

Taking control of your weight is important but it doesn’t have to be a stressful endeavor. Just take your time and focus on what’s important. Eventually, you’ll get that control you are looking for.
